1st Generation
Jonathan Adams was born 1780-1790 in SC and died October 1838 in Limestone Co., AL. He was married on October 22, 1807 in Clarke Co., GA to Rachel McClendon who was born in GA. Jonathan came to Giles Co., TN in the early 1800s. It is believed that he lived on the AL-TN state line. He was a signer of the 1810 Sims petition protesting the use of Federal troops to burn the settlers off their land. He appears on the 1812 tax list and the 1820 census in Giles Co., TN. In 1815 and 1816, he is listed on the residents list for Mississippi Territory (Madision Co., AL). By 1830 he is in Limestone Co. Family legend says that he came alone to TN and Rachel came later with the three oldest children. It is also said that they had 16 children, eight boys and eight girls.

" They were among the first settlers of Limestone Co. and like some of the others were burnt out by the soldiers. His name was on the petition to the President protesting the use of soldiers to force the settlers to move." Source: " From Across The River " page 162.

This quote is in reference to the fact that the early settlers of Limestone Co. illegally moved onto Indian lands and were forced out by the government.

Jonathan died in Oct. 1838 and his son-in-law Edward Legg was appointed administrator of his estate. The only record of his property is the following:

1 Gray Mare $75.00 7 head of Sheep $10.00
1 Colt at $20.00 2 Stacks of Fodder $5.00
1 Cow and Calf $10.00 1 Yoke of Bulls $18.00

One researcher found this story which is reputed to have come from a granddaughter of Edward (son of Lovell and Sarah Legg) and Caroline Smith Legg. Caroline worked at a store off Highway 127 close to the bridge near Leggtown. Rachel Adams was on her way to Texas (probably by train) when she was robbed and they stole all her money. She returned to Alabama and died.
