BAYZE WELLES was born August 5, 1744 in Farmington, Hartford Co., CT and died October 24, 1814 in Hartford. (Source: His 3rd great-granddaughter, Clara I. Keeler.) Some sources say that he died at Valley Forge, PA. He married Ruth Gaylord on February 1, 1769 in West Hartford, CT (Source: Early Connecticut Marriages Prior to 1800 Early Connecticut Marriages: Second Book West Hartford and From Revolutionary War pension application #W18311 filled out by son Ralph, who says date is 2-9-1769). She was born March 28, 1750 and died October 22, 1835 in West Hartford, CT.

Bayze's pension application was approved for service in the Revolutionary War. The family was awarded $1,791.17 payable to his children, Ralph Wells, Hiram Wells, Bayze Wells, Ruth Hancock, Russell Wells and Calvin Wells. A letter dated August 15, 1917 addressed to Senator Francis E. Warren, who had made an inquiry) states that the record shows "that he enlisted in the Connecticut Troops May 10, 1775, as Sergeant in Captain John Sedgwick's company, Colonel Benjamin Hinman's regiment, and was commissioned January 23, 1776, Ensign in Captain John Steven's company, Colonel Burrall's regiment. On July 24, 1776, he was commissioned Lieutenant of Marines, on board Captain Simonds' gondola PROVIDENCE, in service on the lakes. On January 1, 1777, he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Captain Jesse Kimball's company, Colonel John Chandler's regiment. he resigned March 1, 1778, on account of disability caused by violent bilious fevers while in the service."

From "Wellespring: November 1993":

From a traveling displayboard on the gunboat replica, Philadelphia: "The Northern Campaign Through The Eyes of an Enlisted Man" - "Bayze Wells of Farmington, Connecticut enlisted in the colonial army in May 1775, and was sent north with his regiment to the Champlain Valley. He participated in several scouting forays in Canada during the summer of 1775, and then moved up the lake with the troops to St. Johns for the fall invasion of Canada. Like so many soldiers, he fell ill, and was sent back to Connecticut to recuperate."

"In January, 1776, Wells re-enlisted in the Northern army. He marched to Canada in the spring,...returning to Ticonderoga..." It was here that Bayze was assigned to be an officer (Ensign) and helped to build the naval fleet at Whitehall and sail down the lake (Lake Champlain flows north, so "down" is north.).

"On October 11, 1776, the first battle between an American and a British fleet, the battle of Valcour Island, was fought on the lake. Benedict Arnold, the American commander, with a decidedly inferior force, inflicted severe damage on the enemy and then escaped during the night. although overtaken two days later he again, after a fight of a few hours, made a successful retreat, saving all his men."
