Will of Jacob McLendon

Will dated August 16, 1791; Probated April 23, 1793


In the name of God, Amen. I JACOB McLENDON, SR. of the County of Wilkes, and State of Georgia, Planter. I, Being in perfect health and memory, thanks be given unto God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and testament, that is to say principally, and -

First of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body, I recommend to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the direction of my executors, nothing doubting but at the resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God; and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to help me within this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following form:

First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved son, ISAAC McLENDON, one Negro boy named Ben, which is his part of my estate. Also, I give and bequeath unto my son SAMUEL McLENDON, a tract of land at corner hickory, Sowermas (s) line above WESTBROOKE clearing, thence a direct line to a station poplar near the head of Reedy Branch containing five hundred acres, more or less, including his own plantation where he now liveth, also one Negro man named Necoe, which is his part of my estate.

I also give unto my son, TRAVIS McLENDON, one Negro man named Premos, which is his part of my estate.

I also give unto my son DENNIS McLENDON, a tract, and plantation formerly belonging to JOHN WESTBROOKE, dec, together with part of my own tract. Beginning at a white oak on Fishing Creek bank a little above the Fishtrap Ford, thence a direct line through the Plantation to a marked Red Oak on the branch that runs through said plantation, thence up said branch to the head, thence a direct course to JACOB McLENDON, JR.'s line, thence along said line to the said WESTBROOKE land before mentioned, being six hundred and fifty acres, more or less; also a Negro boy named Adam, also one Negro woman named Dinah; also one set of blacksmith tools; also a stock of cattle in Washington County, which is part of my estate.

Also, I give unto my son, AMOS McLENDON, all the rest of my improvements whereon I now live, with all the land between the line before mentioned, between SAMUEL and DENNIS McLENDON's lines, including six hundred acres, more or less, also one Negro man named Harry; one Negro woman named Jinney, one Negro boy named Peter, also all my stock of cattle that I have at my home, also my stock of horses and hogs I have at my home which is his part of my estate after his mother's decease, and not before; also all the house furniture left to her own disposal.

Also, I give unto JEMMIMA, my beloved daughter, twenty-five pounds to be paid in tobacco at market price to be raised out of AMOS's part of my estate.

Also, I give unto LANEY, my beloved daughter, twenty-five pounds to be paid in tobacco at market price to be raised out of AMOS's part of my estate which is her part of my estate.

Also, I give unto PENNELOPE, my beloved daughter, twenty-five pounds to be paid in tobacco at market price to be raised out of AMOS's part of my estate, which is her part of my estate.

Also, I give unto NANCY, my beloved daughter, twenty-five pounds to be paid in tobacco at market price to be raised out of AMOS's part of my estate.

Each legacy to be paid yearly, beginning at the eldest and continuing until each is paid which makes it four payments.

Also, I give unto my beloved daughter, BETHANEY, one Negro girl named Sall, which is her part of my estate.

I also constitute and appoint ISAAC McLENDON and MARTHA McLENDON, my beloved wife, to be Executors of this my last will and testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this sixteenth day of August in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one.
